It completely took me out of it switching back and forth in the voices. It truly makes no sense. I returned the audiobook and bought the kindle version instead. Questioning my use of the word, I looked it up. Yes, an anecdote is, “…a short account of a particular incident or event, especially of an interesting or amusing nature.”Yes, that’s what the book is: anecdotes, and most are indeed interesting or amusing, so I read them all, which took a long time. It’s a long book and I came out of it with the literary equivalent of an evening eating chips. You don’t have to have done it to know it’s not a good feeling. About half of the book is read by someone else, and I feel cheated. Whenever the other narrating is reading, it just feels wrong. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paul Lutter -- The artist's gaze : I'm both reading and listening to this volume simultaneously. I don't want to get into a debate about whether Tracy Ullman was a right choice to co-narrate the Audible version (she is, by the way, fantastic as David's counterpart in reading his words, in my opinion). What I appreciate even more than the complimentary way Ullman and Sedaris read together is the fact that we have been invited into the ways an author notices the world around him, how he engages it, how he plays with language around it, how he experiments with points of view in relation to the everyday realities around him. In a certain way, we are invited into nothing less than his process as an artist, which I take to be a sacred thing. If the eyes are the window to the soul, as the ancients suggested, then what we have here is a glimpse into Sedaris's soul. And what a soul it is. I hope you read this book -- and all the other books he's written. I am better for it, as a writer, a reader, and a fellow traveler in the world. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021 )

I love that he shares so much of his life with his readers and after reading it you feel like you would like to be his best friend. David is smart, snarky and sweet. I felt like this book was a real gift to his fans and it is a great sequel to his first diary Theft by Finding. I know it will be a long wait for a third but I also know it will be worth the wait. Short snippets of his sluces if life but most of them aren't that interesting. My own diary makes for better reading.
